About the Department

The Blue Mountain College Teacher Education Program affords students meaningful learning opportunities that support their professional growth. Prior to the Teacher Internship, our elementary and secondary education students engage in field experiences in local public school classrooms. These experiences include observing effective teaching and classroom management, assisting individual children with academic interventions, and conducting whole-class presentations of grade-level topics.
BMC offers nine programs in education: K-3, K-6, K-12 (Physical Education and Music Education), and Secondary Education (English, Biology, Mathematics, Social Science, and Spanish). Additionally, students may earn course credit toward multiple endorsements in the field of education. Licensure requirements include:

K-3 – 120 designated semester hours
K-6 – 126 designated semester hours
K-12 Physical Education – 120 designated semester hours
K-12 Music Education – 135 designated semester hours
Secondary English Education – 120 designated semester hours
Secondary Biology Education – 141 designated semester hours
Secondary Mathematics Education – 120 designated semester hours
Secondary Social Science Education – 123 designated semester hours
Secondary Spanish Education – 120 designated semester hours

The Department of Education sponsors two student-led clubs: Kappa Delta Pi – by invitation and Apple Club. We urge our education majors to participate in one or more of the clubs. There is always something to do “on the hill” at BMC. Come and join us!
Program Goals
A student who completes a teacher education program will:
• Understand the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful to students,
• Understand how individuals learn and develop and can provide learning opportunities that support their intellectual, social and personal lives,
• Understand how learners differ in their approaches to learning and creates instructional opportunities that are adapted to diverse learners,
• Understand and use a variety of instructional strategies to encourage student development of critical thinking, problem-solving, and performance skills,
• Use an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self motivation,
• Use knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom,
• Plan instruction based on knowledge of subject matter, learners, the community, national content standards, and curriculum goals,
• Understand and use a variety of traditional and performance-based formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social, and physical development of the learner,
• Use reflection to continually evaluate the effects of his or her instructional and assessment strategies on student dispositions for learning, of choices and actions on others, and seeks opportunities to grow professionally,
• Foster relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support students’ learning and well being.
