Library Services

Guyton Library provides a favorable environment for reading, research, and study by BMC students, faculty, and staff.  The collection includes books, periodicals and newspapers, audiovisual materials, and electronic resources. While the collection primarily contains resources for study and research, some current fiction and leisure materials are included in the collection. Library patrons may access electronic resources through a computer that has internet access.  If a book or article is not available, the Library can often get it through interlibrary loan from another library. Reproduction services including a self-service copier and computer printer are available near the main desk of the library. A computer scanner allows patrons to scan and save materials to a USB memory storage device. The May Gardner Black collection, Anderson Room, and Mary Dean Hollis Historical Doll collection offer patrons an opportunity to revisit the history and heritage of the college.

Visitors may use materials within the library, but will be required to obtain a statement of permission from the Vice President for Academic Affairs before they can check out books.

The library has two professional librarians, three paraprofessionals, plus student workers to assist you with your information needs.  


Circulation of Materials


Stack books may be checked out for three weeks and renewed two times. Faculty members are given extended time for books needed in teaching or research. Renewals may be made in person, online, over the phone, or via e-mail. 

Reference books are to be used in the library.

Reserve books are checked out according to time limits set by individual faculty members. Most reserve books are for in-library or 2-day use. Patrons may request reserve books for in-library use at the main desk in exchange for a form of photo I.D.

Periodicals and Newspapers

Current periodicals are displayed on shelves in the reading area.  Back issues are available at the Library. To request periodicals, fill out a green periodical call slip for each issue you need and a staff member will retrieve the issues and ask for your student ID as security. Periodicals are not removed from the library without special permission. Return periodical to circulation desk when you finish.  A self-service copy machine is available for photocopying. Be aware of copyright restrictions. 

EBSCOhost Databases offer online full-text periodical databases accessible from the Guyton Library Webpage. Instructions are available online under Help.

Commercial Appeal, Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, New Albany Gazette, and Southern Sentinel are located on the newspaper rack. Please replace when you finish. Back issues are housed downstairs and retained for four months.


Audiovisual materials may be selected through the online catalog located on the library webpage. Videos and DVDs may be checked out for two days or they may be viewed in the library. CDs are also available for students to listen to in the audio-visual room. Other materials may be checked out in response to special assignments by faculty. Renewals may be made by phone.

EBSCOhost Databases And Interfaces

Academic Search Premier -- Provides coverage in biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, psychology, religion & theology, et. with indexing for over 8,000 publications, and full text for over 4,650 of them. PDF backfiles to 1975 or further are available for over 100 journals, and searchable cited references are provided for more than 1,000 titles.

Child Development & Adolescent Studies -- Provides references to the current and historical literaturae related to growth and development of children through the age of 21.  This database includes all of the issures of Child Development Abstracts & Bibliography form 1927-2001 previously published by the Society for Research in Child Development plus new coverage on Child Reights and welfare issues. Book reviews and abstractsfrom hundreds of journals and a bibliography of thousands of technical reports, books, book chapters, theses and dissertations covering biomedical and social sciences worldwide are indexed.

EBSCO Animals -- Provides in-depth information on a variety of topics relating to animals.  The database consists of indexing, abstracts, and full text records describing the nature and habitat of familiar animals.

Education Research Complete -- Provides bibliographic and full text scholarly research and information relating to all areas of education from early childhood to higher education, educational specialties such as multilingual education, health education and testing; curriculum instruction, administration, policy, funding, and related social issues.  The database includes indexing and abstracts for more than 1,500 journals as well as full text for more than 750 journals, 100 books and monographs, and numerous education-related conference papers.

ERIC -- the Educational Resources Information Center, provides access to education literature and resources.  The database provides access to information from journals included in the Current Index of Journals in Education and Resources in Education Index.  ERIC provides full text of more than 2,200 digests along with references for additioanl information and citations and abstracts from over 1,000 educational and education-related journal.

Family & Society Studies Worldwide -- A core resource providing the most comprehensive coverage of research, policy, and practice literature in the fields of Family Science, Human Ecology, Human Development, and Social Welfare. Coverage spans from 1970 to the present indexing publications from a wide range of social science disciplines including anthropology, sociology, psychology, demography, health sciences, education, economics, law, history and social work.  Source documents include professional journals, conference papers, books, book chapters, government reports, discussion and working papers, statistical documents, theses & dissertations and other sources.

Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia -- This database provides over 25,000 encyclopedic entries covering a variety of subject areas.

Library, Information Science & Technology Abstract (LISTA) -- Indexes more than 600 periodicals, plus books, research reports and proceedings.  Subject coverage includes librarianship, classification, cataloging, bibliometrics, online information retrieval, information management and more.  Coverage extends back as far as the mid-1960's.

Designed specifically for high school libraries, this database provides full text for more than 700 popular general interest and current events publications with information dating as far back as 1975 for key magazines. MAS Ultra - School Edition also provides more than 500 full text pamphlets, more than 350 full text reference books, 84,774 biographies, 100,554 primary source documents, and an Image Collection of 202,164 photos, maps and flags. Student Research Center is another EBSCOhost interface to search this database.
Primary Search -- Provides full text for nearly 70 popular magazines for elementary school research.  All full text articles included in the database are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles), and full text information dates as far back as 1990.  Kid's Search is another EBSCOhost interface to search this database.
Facts on File News Services Databases -- Contains the World News Digest and Issues and Controversies databases.                

Gale Literary Index -- Master index to130 literature products from Gale.

World Book Online

World Book Online resources are now available for Guyton Library patrons. Products include World Book Advanced, World Book Discover, World Book Kids, World Book Student, Hispanica, and Estudiantil Hallazhgos en Lines. Located under General Sources, World Book Online provides access to encyclopedia content, e-books, images and sounds, research tools, and as well as primary source documents.

Interlibrary Loan

If a book or article is not available, the Library can get it through interlibrary loan from another library. This service generally takes about two weeks and is not guaranteed. The best advice is to request an item as soon as possible. Before requesting an item check the library's online catalog and periodical holdings to be sure the library does not already own the item. Reproduction of Library Materials

Photocopies and printouts are $.15 per page. Payment is required for each page copied or printed, even those thrown away. Printouts are paid at the circulation desk, students without money may fill out an IOU. A self-service copy machine provides change for $1 and $5 bills. Please have change or bills of small denominations, because the library does not keep large amounts of money for change. For best results check paper size and other indicator lights before making photocopies. When printing be sure you are printing only the section that you need.

Transparencies suggested for use with the photocopier are available for $.50.  Instructions for use are provided.

A computer scanner allows patrons to scan images and documents to a USB storage device.

Be aware of copyright restrictions.  

Miscellaneous Services

A laminating machine stored in the library workroom allows patrons to laminate materials for $.60 a page.  Ask library staff at the main desk for assistance.

Library Computer Use Guidelines


Guyton Library houses a number of laptop computers for use by faculty, staff and students. Use of the computers in the library will comply with the mission and the purpose of the College. The computer and the Internet services will be used for the purposes of learning, instruction and research and will not be used for entertainment or for personal profit. By using the computer resources at the library the users agree to abide by these guidelines and Policy 2.22: Acceptable Computer Use.


Only the Director of Information Services is authorized to install software on the computers. Copying of software applications is not allowed. Downloading of software is not permitted.


Internet access can not be used for illegal purposes, such as violating copyright laws, harassing or libeling others, and especially obtaining and/or viewing material which is in violation of local, state or federal obscenity statutes. Use of the Internet and computer services is subject to the local, state, and federal laws of communication, privacy, copyright and security. Abuse of computer services will result in penalties determined by the Dean of Students. Appeals will follow due process procedures in accordance with Policy 4.13: Student Conduct and Judiciary. Content

The library is not responsible for the content or accuracy of the information obtained on the Internet or other online services. Users are solely responsible for all the consequences and damages, both direct and indirect, that might result from the use of such information obtained from these services. They are advised to use only those on-line resources whose quality is above reproof.

Internet Policy

The Internet is available to users primarily as an additional tool for learning. Users are expected to use the Internet for lawful purposes only. Viewing, transmitting and downloading offensive, pornographic or illegal material is in violation of the proper use of the Internet services in accordance with Policy 2.22: Acceptable Computer Use.. Violators will face disciplinary actions as determined by the Dean of Students in accordance with Policy 4.13: Student Conduct and Judiciaryas noted in Item E above. Users will not use the Internet services at the library to join or participate in chat rooms or become members of unapproved clubs and/or organizations. Computers will not be used to harass, injure or hurt individuals. Web pages other than approved College or departmental web pages will not be installed on the computers.

Care of Computers

Destruction of computer equipment will result in disciplinary action in accordance with Policy 4.13: Student Conduct and Judiciary. Changing software configuration and making or sending viruses will result in disciplinary action. Users will not save any work to the computer's hard drive, patron files left on the hard drive are automatically deleted at the end of the day. Users must supply their own USB storage device for saving information. Any technical problems should be reported promptly to the Library staff.


Some basic personal knowledge of computer use, software applications and accessing the Internet is expected. Required training for users of the Guyton Library computer services will be provided by appropriate personnel at an appointed time.

Patron Privacy and Confidentiality

Users will respect the privacy of the individuals using the library computers. Users will understand that their activities on the computers are monitored by library personnel.

Electronic Communications Privacy Act:

Guyton Library adheres to the provisions of the Mississippi Code (2001) (39-3-365) and the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights concerning patron privacy and confidentiality of library records. New provisions of the USA Patriot Act of October 26, 2001 affect patron privacy and records disclosure by giving broader authority for law enforcement to conduct searches. This includes identifying people who access computers "without permission," installing hardware or software to be used in tracing user information, and collecting "dialing, routing, addressing or signaling" information. Patrons are advised that this law pertains to public and personal computers.


The Guyton Library Computer Use Information and Guidelines may be modified as required by technological changes.

Library Computer Use Rules

The library computers are available during regular library hours except when reserved by faculty for specific course sessions. Listed below are the rules governing the use of these computers in the library. In addition, of course, student use of computers in Guyton Library is guided by Policy 2.22: Acceptable Computer Use. 1. All users must check in with a library staff member, sign the schedule at the front desk and clear their time with a staff member. All cell phones, pagers and other communication devises must be turned off or put on silent/vibrating before entering the library. Telephone conversations are not allowed in the library.

2. Only authorized personnel may install software on the library computers.

3. No chat rooms, instant messaging, playing games, mass emailing, using streaming audio and/or video, file sharing programs, etc., are permitted on library computers. Policy 2.22:  Acceptable Computer Use. 4. Users must provide their own USB storage device.

5. Patrons must not attempt to repair any computer equipment. Any technical problems must be reported to the library staff.

6. Food and drinks are not allowed in the library.

7. User files left on the hard drive are automatically deleted at the end of the day; important work of users should be saved on a USB storage device.

8. The Internet must be used for lawful purposes only. Violations will result in disciplinary action by the College in accordance with Policy 4.13: Student Conduct and Judiciary.

9. Shut down the computers when finished.

10. All waste paper is to be discarded in appropriate containers.

11. Only patrons 18 and over are permitted to use the computers unless they are accompanied by an adult (e.g., a parent or tutor).  Library patrons not affiliated with Blue Mountain College must submit a picture ID and sign the computer use sign-in sheet.  The ID will be returned after the patron pays for any materials printed.
